For my project, I decided to focus on the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, which is a vast floating island of debris (land debris from North America and Asia as well as debris from boats, oil rigs, or cargo ships) that has been carried into the ocean. It is estimated to be about 1 million square miles, or twice the size of Texas, but measuring it exactly is almost immpossible because of how big it is and there is likely a lot more trash sinking deep beneath the surface, which is immeasurable. This is an important issue because it is taking up a lot of space in an ocean that should be plastic free. It is devastatingly affecting marine life; animals can get trapped in the trash or eat it and suffocate. It is affecting the ocean and it's animals more than people realize. No one really knows the depth of the problem because of the immeasurable size of the garbage patch which is only getting worse. I tried to show this problem in my project by making a fish out of trash to show the connection between trash and marine life. I included the names of Asia and North America on the map to show how we as humans are causing this issue from the constant waste that we produce on land. For materials, I used paint for the background, trash for the fish and on top of the land, and letters cut out from magazines for the names of places.
Rough Draft
For my rough draft, I sketched out the outline of the map which will be painted with different colors or made with a college of different colored papers. I also sketch out an outline of a basic fish shape which will be made out of various kinds of trash that is found in the ocean like bottles, wrappers, etc..
Brainstorm Sketch
I decided to change my idea for my project because I wasn't really inspired by my other idea, so I wanted to focus on something that a lot of people are aware of but don't know much about: the Great Pacific Garbage Patch. I want to create a map of the Pacific Ocean with either paint or a collage of different colored papers to look like a normal world map. I'll collect trash and assemble it into a collage the shape of a fish in the ocean to represent the garbage patch and the huge impact that trash has on fish.
This is the notes and sketch I did to brainstorm my ideas for the We-Fill mural. I have recently been really gravitating towards sea otters, so I wanted to show how sea otters are impacted by trash (which is a lot since they live in the ocean). I wrote some notes of what I wanted the mural to look like in terms of colors and types of materials, and I drew some other ideas of art pieces to do instead of my original idea.
